As early as the 15th Century a cylinder with pins operating cams was invented to regulate the ringing of bells. It is generally accepted that the first known “music(al) comb” was used as a gadget by a Swiss clock maker in 1796 and incorporated in watches, snuff-boxes and other objects.

This musical comb was made from, hardened and tempered steel in a certain way so that no bending of the comb would  occur.

This comb consists of a number of teeth in varying lengths.By plucking teeth, usually by a pin on a cylinder, a note is produced that will vary depending on the length of the tooth.

The pins on the cylinder are placed in such a way, that by rotating the cylinder at a certain speed, a melody or song is produced.

The cylinder is powered by a spring, to be wound by a key or similar device and the speed is regulated by a governor. All components are fixed to the bed pan, usually metal or copper.

And So the music box was born 

At first tiny enough to fit into the pocket of a waistcoat the music box was soon transformed into giant designs and many other grander variations.

The development of the music box took place from the beginning of the 19th Century till the early 20th Century and therefore reigned, in various forms, as the mechanical music of choice for just over a century.

 In 1877 Thomas Edison would present the world with the ground breaking device Phonograph (or better known as Gramophone) which would change both the way we listen to music and the landscape of the music industry. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison’s phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound.

The phonograph is a device for the mechanical recording and reproduction of sound.  In its later forms, it is also called  a record player. The sound vibrations  are recorded and impressed into the surface of a rotating cylinder or disc, called a record.

To recreate the sound, the surface is also rotated while a playback stylus traces the groove and is vibrated by it. This very faintly reproduces the recorded sound.

In the 1880’s  there came a transition from phonograph cylinders to flat discs.  There was a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center. Thereby coining the term gramophone for disc record players,

The disc phonograph record was the dominant audio recording format throughout most of the 20th century. . From the mid-1980s on, phonograph use on a standard record player declined sharply because of the rise of the cassette tape, compact disc and other digital recording formats.

Records are still a favorite format for some. (particularly in hip hop and electronic dance music), and have undergone a revival in the 2010s.

The original recordings of musicians, which may have been recorded on tape or digital methods,are sometimes re-issued on vinyl.

A player piano is a self-playing piano,containing a pneumatic mechanism that operates the piano action via pre-programmed music recorded on perforated paper.

The piano-player system began development in 1895, in Detroit, Michigan. It took the form of a large wooden cabinet that stood in front of any ordinary piano. From the rear protruded a row of felt-covered wooden fingers.  These were aligned with the keyboard and activated the piano’s keys in the same manner as a human pianist. Levers and pedals in front of the cabinet or cabinet-piano controlled the tempo, the loudness, and other dynamics and accents. The pumping foot-treadle for activating the pneumatic system came to be located under the piano.

The story of the piano begins in Padua, Italy in 1709. A harpsichord maker named Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori is credited with its entrance into the world.   Many other stringed and keyboard instruments preceded the piano and led to the development of the instrument as we know it today.
