Wine 101……the beginning of WINE knowledge
Lets look at Some Basic Wine Information
WINE is an alcoholic beverage made with the fermented juice of grapes.
Wine Grapes vs Table Grapes
Technically, wine can be made with any fruit (i.e. apples, cranberries, plums, etc). But if it just says βwineβ on the label then itβs made with grapes. (By the way, wine grapes are different than table grapes). Wine grapes are smaller, sweeter, have thick skins, and contain seeds. Within the skins are various nutrients that become deposited into the wine. Red wines generally contain more minerals and antioxidants than most white wines. Sweeter grapes ferment into higher alcohol wine. Today, the most planted wine grape in the world is Cabernet Sauvignon (“cab-err-nay saw-vin-yon”).
This is a seemingly simple beverage but becomes more complex the more you study it. However, the good thing is, it doesnβt matter how much you know, nearly everyone can appreciate wine. In short, wine is good
It may surprise you to know that there are over 1,300 wine grape varieties used in commercial production. However, only about 100 of these varieties make up 75% of the world’s vineyards.
Wine grapes take an entire season to ripen and thus, wine is produced just once a year. The harvest season in the northern hemisphere (Europe, US) is from AugustβSeptember and the harvest season in the southern hemisphere (Argentina, Australia) is from FebruaryβApril.
Wine and Health
Red wine has been touted as beneficial to reducing blood pressure for about 30years,.But according to scientific studies it is only red wine that does this conclusively. And it is only the non-alcoholic kind.
Several different types of antioxidants are found in certain wines that may actually have anti-cancer benefits. The most recent news on cancer came out in 2014. A component called Ellagic Acid may have some anticarcinogenic properties:
